“Youth” Running Race and National Road Running Championship

The running race is held over a distance of 10,000 m, for senior athletes (year 2002 and older), junior athletes (year 2003 and younger). s part of the Running Race, the Republic of Moldova Road Running Championship is held, in which athletes from the same age categories as in the Running Race compete.

Running competitions are also held – the Popular Race, over a distance of 5500 m. Athletes born in 2005 and younger participate in this competition, veteran athletes born in 1982 and older, at the start all those wishing to compete at this distance are admitted.
The running race has as objectives:

  • Promoting a healthy lifestyle through running as the most accessible and most important exercise for physical fitness.
  • Encouraging the practice of performance and large public sports.
  • Promoting the image of Ungheni City through sports activities.

It reached its 24th edition, with over 300 participants from all regions of the Republic of Moldova, but also from Romania and Ukraine.

Equestrian cup „Iacob Ciachir”

It is a cultural-sports competition.

The equestrian cup is organized in memory of Iacob Ciachir. The former horse farm in Ungheni, established by Iacob Ciachir, was famous throughout the ex-Soviet area, where thoroughbred horses, very expensive and in demand at the time, were bred here. The event was initiated by Ion Poia from Ungheni and implemented by the Junior Chamber International from Ungheni – JCI Ungheni, in partnership with Ungheni City Hall, Ungheni District Council, the Republican School of Equestrianism and Modern Pentathlon.

The first edition of the Cup took place in September 22, 2018. 20 horses were involved in the event, of which 5 from the Ungheni Riding School and another 15 from other schools in the country that proved their courage, skills, craftsmanship, elegance in front of hundreds of Ungheni people.

The objective of the festival is to capitalize on the treasure of popular creation with a religious character, to familiarize the young generations with the Easter song and traditions and to transmit Christian customs and traditions that have an Easter character, but also customs of various Christian rituals.

The exhibition brings to the attention of visitors traditional Easter bakery products, embroideries, carpets, handicrafts, etc.

The festival has become an international one, with performers from the neighboring states of Ukraine – Chernivtsi and from Romania: Brașov, Transylvania, Dobrogea presenting popular and Christian customs and traditions from the area.

The first edition of the Festival “Hora de la Prut” took place on April 29, 2010, on International Dance Day. It was a first time for the Republic of Moldova, because all genres of dance were present. 15 dance collectives from the Republic of Moldova participated in the Festival.

The festival has turned into an international one, in which music and dance collectives from various countries participate: Romania, Greece, Poland, Latvia, Ukraine, Russia and the Republic of Moldova .

The “magic” sphere is a construction located near Mircesti village, Ungheni district, with a diameter of approximately 18 meters. It is currently not used in any way, but is believed to have been designed during the USSR to house space tracking equipment. Inside the dome is amazing acoustics. If you stand in the middle, any sound of your voice is amplified many times and creates cosmic sensations from the reflected echo.

Multifunctional cultural center “In the yard of caring grandparents”

The village Zagarancea houses an outdoor museum that tells the history of the settlement on the banks of the Prut, located just 4 km from Ungheni City.

In order to reproduce with the greatest precision and accuracy the life of the peasants of the past, the exhibits are placed with great care “In the yard of the caring grandparents”, being divided depending on the occupations of the locals.

Thus, here you can find exhibits distributed in compartments such as: “At the oven”, “The Great House”, “In the cellar”, “The Craftsman”, “The peasant and the land”, “Sheepfold from the valleye” and “The wish hut”.

The space is not only an open space museum, but also a cultural center and a zoo.

Ciachir’s villa („White House”)

It was built around 1975, by the famous state farm “Prut”, led by Iacob Ciachir, located just 2-3 kilometers from Ungheni City. Right from the beginning it was called the “white house”. The official name: „Дом передового опыта” (The house of advanced experience) didn’t take root. As well its other name: Guests House.

The building hosted seminars, lessons on fruit growing. Scientists from the former USSR, from outside, visited the famous apple orchard nearby, to study the experience in this field.

The building was visited during the USSR by high state dignitaries, on their way to Moscow or to the socialist countries. The most important visitor was Leonid Brezhnev, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Another communist activist also passed through here – the dictator Kim Ir-Sen, the leader of North Korea for 46 years. Aleksei Kosighin, prime minister of the USSR from 1964 to 1980, and Ion Iliescu, the president of Romania, were guests of honor at the villa.

The Jewish cemetery in Sculeni

In the border locality Sculeni are the remains of a Jewish cemetery. The graves had specific stone monuments, instead of Orthodox crosses. In time, however, they were desecrated. At the request of the kolkhoz from Cioropcani, during the Khrushchev period, more than 40 wagons with tombstones were removed from here, which were used in the construction of a farm. The rest would have been taken by the locals, either for construction or for road paving.

About the graves themselves, it is said that at the request of the Jews, around 1978, the dead were exhumed and taken to the Balti and Falesti cemetery.

Napadeni village cemetery

The cemetery is known and interesting due to the fact that there is a bell tower on its territory, which, however, is destroyed. This bell tower reminds of the imposing former church of Saint Nicholas, built in 1881.

Also here is the grave of the journalist priest Grigorie Constantinescu (1875-1932), Alexei Mateevici’s first Romanian language teacher. Grigorie Constantinescu studied at the Seminary “Veniamin” in Iasi (1888 – 1896) and at the Spiritual Academy in Kiev (1897 – 1902), he was a translator at the Romanian Consulate in Odessa (1904 – 1906), the First Professor of the Romanian Language at the Theology Seminary from Chisinau and the Diocesan School for Girls (1906 – 1918), Editorial Secretary of the magazine “Luminatorul” (1908), Secretary of the Diocesan Printing Office (since 1909), Editor and Director of the newspaper “Glasul Bessarabiei” (1913 – 1914), all in Chisinau. He was a priest at the archiepiscopal cathedral (1918 – 1919), then a parish priest in Napadeni (1919 – 1932).

Outdoor museum of agricultural technology

The museum was created in 2016 with the aim to present the evolution of agricultural techniques on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. It is located in the premises of the agricultural enterprise LTD “Agrosfera-BM”, an institution that also provided the museum with its first collection of agricultural machinery.

Currently, the museum has 120 exhibits.

The oldest agricultural machine exhibited here was built in 1983 and is an IuMZ-6A model of tractor, which was previously used for grain transportation and tillage.

Many exhibits are functional and can be used in agricultural land processing.

The ceramic factory appears as a result of the efforts of local folk craftsmen from Ungheni to transform pottery into a branch of industry. Thus, in 1957 in Ungheni City, a section for the production of household ceramics appeared, from which the well-known ceramics factory was later developed.

The originality and diversity of the products made this institution known abroad, in countries such as: Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Syria, Switzerland, France, USA, etc.

Today, S.A. Ceamica-Ungheni continues the traditional occupation of the ancient potters from Prut, thinking and developing new, equally original models.

The “Holy Prophet Ilie Tezvitean” monastery was founded in 2002, with the blessing of His Holiness Peter, Archbishop of Chisinau, Metropolitan of Bessarabia and Exarch of Lands.

Former military unit, which for more than ten years was without an owner, after the departure of the Soviet soldiers, ended up in a deplorable state – no doors, no windows, with a damaged roof and no electricity.

The renovation works were carried out with the support of the parishioners.

On November 2, 2003, the consecration service of the place was performed and the first Holy Liturgy was celebrated by the Most Reverend Metropolitan and Exarch Peter.

The old building of the Railway Station

It is the oldest urban edifice in Ungheni, being built by the Russians in 1874-1875, when the railway was also put into operation. In the interwar years, the station bore the name of the ruler Vasile Lupu.

After the Second World War, the Soviets gave up the name, intervened in the construction, thus the building bears the imprint of the “Stalinist Empire” style. In the Ungheni railway junction, the trains leaving from the Republic of Moldova to Romania and beyond pass from wide gauge (Soviet standard) to narrower gauge (European standard).

The “Eiffel” railway bridge over the river Prut

Engineering construction, valuable through the fame of its author, Gustave Eiffel. The construction is the result of an emergency situation, when in 1875, the original bridge, designed by the Russian engineer Balitskii, was damaged by the waters of the Prut.

To redo the project, Gustave Eifel was invited, at that time only a bridge builder, whose fame would come much later, through the famous Parisian tower.

It is the only railway bridge connecting the two banks of the Prut. By a decision of the City Council of April 20, 2012, on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of its inauguration, the bridge was named “Gustave Eiffel”.

On May 6, 1990, the first and most important flowers bridge took place here, when Romanians from both banks of the Prut managed to shake hands, after 35 years of isolation.

Pirlita village museum

Created at the initiative of the Buzovoi family, with the support of the local community, the Pirlita Village Museum was created in 2004. Located in the former headquarters of the kolkhoz “Dimitrov”, the institution has 4 exhibition rooms.

The Museum’s heritage includes a number of over 3000 exhibits, collected by the institution’s employees, villagers, teachers and students. The exhibits are grouped into collections of folk wear, barks and carpets, traditional fabrics, household utensils, numismatics, photographs, old books and documents.

The Museum’s permanent exhibition presents both the history of the locality and its ethnography.

Of particular interest are the two peasant houses, specific to the locality, as well as the barks, carpets, towels, peasant furniture, but also documents, books and vintage photographs, exhibited in the permanent exhibition and in the temporary exhibitions.
